You could use the the embroidery chain stitch with embroidery floss. The embroidery floss is much smaller so it will fit on the small circle better.

It should work just …
It should work just as well on a knitted piece. Just remember to make a very secure knot and sew in your tail. The embroidery should not be coming apart. You can also take some washable fabric glue and the tail to the yarn so it will not come apart.
