How should I ask my teachers for letters of recommendation?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I actually have a few questions about recommendation letters.

1. How should I go about asking teachers for them?
2. Is there anything I should give my teachers if they say yes?
3. Is there anything else I should know about recommendation letters?

1. I would choose teachers with whom you have a strong, personal relationship. You certainly want to select teachers whose classes you have done well in. I would simply approach them before/after class and ask "Would you be comfortable writing a letter of recommendation for me? I am applying for …." If this is not feasible, send them an e-mail asking if they would be comfortable writing a letter of recommendation and explaining why you would like a letter from them.
2. It is customary to give the teacher an envelope in which to place their recommendation. Depending on the program you are applying for, you may need to address and stamp it separately and have the teacher sign the seal (therefore preventing any tampering with the envelopes contents). Some programs will ask that you have the professor mail the envelope separately, while some request that you include it in your general mailing.
3. Remember that the teacher is doing you a favor by writing a letter of recommendation. Try to make it as easy for them as possible, including explaining what the program is you are applying for. Do not try to dictate what the teacher says. If they ask you, be prepared to talk up a few competencies you have demonstrated in their class or activities that you feel are relevant.

Good Luck!

How do you sign your cover letter if you are emailing it?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I am submitting my resume together with a cover letter online (not as a hard copy) as requested by the company. I am, however, wondering – do I need to sign the letter in this case and if so, how do I sign it? I scanned my signature and inserted in the letter, but is it appropriate? Should I just type my name and leave it unsigned?

You don’t need to sign it, but I sign alot of documents electronically with Adobe Acrobat.

Honestly, as someone who sees alot of resumes, I wouldn’t care at all. In fact, I might see the signature as unnecessary and overdoing it, depending on my mood.

Keep your focus on the fundamentals: follow up call to confirm they recieved it and ask for appointment, do research on the company, be prepared for standard interview questions, send thank you emails to everyone you meet with, etc.

Go for it, and Good luck!

How can I get recognized, and receive college letters concerning wrestling in college?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Im finishing my sophomore year in high school. My friends have been telling me that they have been recieving some college letters, and I didn’t at all. I am better them. Record shows it. I don’t plan to wrestle D-1. I’ll be happy if I get accepted to D-3 or D-2 college team.

So can anybody give me some tips,or tell me how to get exposed to colleges and start recieving letters. I would like to keep my options open.

There are no D3 athletic scholarships in any sport. Are your friends Sophomores or Juniors. You need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center early in your Junior Year.
https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common/
https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/student/index_student.html
Go to camps frequented or run by coaches at the universities you are interested in. Go to the Wrestling Program’s website and look for links to contact the coach. Let him know you are planning on applying to the College and would like to wrestle.
Note what is stated on Stanford’s(D1) website regarding contact with sophomores:
http://www.gostanford.com/compliance/prospects-recruiting.html
See Welcome Recruits:
http://www.gostanford.com/sports/m-wrestl/stan-m-wrestl-body.html
All athletic scholarships are for one year only by NCAA rules, renewable at the discretion of the coach. It is actually better to be tagged as an "athletic recruit" at the D3 level or at an Ivy League as the academic standards are lower for "athletic recruits" at most schools including Ivy League universities, which are D1 but do not offer athletic scholarships. Then see what type of financial package will be offered, as this will usually be for four years.
Good Luck!

How long does it take to receive a letter from USMAPS?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Hi, I’m from TX, and I have a friend who is attending USMAPS (United States Military Academy Preparatory School) at NJ, and I sent him a letter during the last week of July.
I really don’t know anything about their schedule and the way things are managed there, but I’ve heard that they’re in some type of "lockdown," so I was wondering,
will he get my letter as soon as it arrives there?
Is there some type of procedure there that makes sending letters lengthy?
Is sending letters for them any different than civilians sending?
I’d really like to be informed because I worry that I did something wrong or something like that.

Lockdown means that someone did something and they weren’t suppose to. This means that they are probably holding any and all mail for everyone.

Dont worry he will get his letters. And all mail to our military members go through the Post Office or UPS, how ever you want to ship it.

If you are sending him something once he deploys of course it will take a bit longer. But you still only need to put a regular stamp on it to get there (for letters). And sending mail to the military is just like sending mail to family and other friends.

good luck and just keep writing him. He might not be able to write you back as often as you like but know that he is happy to receive your letters. There is nothing like hearing your name at mail call.

How do I go about getting letters of recommendation?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I am going to attempt to get into the professional portion of my program at school, its to become a physical therapist assistant. In order for me to get in, I have to have three letters of recommendation. There not letters that have to be wrote out, they are just forms to be filled out and returned anonymously to the dean.

I don’t know who to get these from. Do you have any tips and pointers for me? I don’t know who to ask and I don’t know how to ask them.

Thank You!

Who to ask:

If possible, someone who you have known for a few years and/or taken more than one class with (that you have done well in!).

Try to ask people who know you in different capacities from each other, like a Science teacher, a Psychology teacher and an advisor or something. Or if you do extracurriculars with a particular professor that can sometimes be helpful.

How to ask:

Email them or speak to them and set up a time to come to their office to chat, or swing by their office hours. Mention to them what you are up to – what you are applying to and why – and ask if they would fill out a form for you. Explain why you thought they would be a good person (since I’ve had you for 2 classes, since we have worked together for so long, since I feel your courses have helped me to get where I am).

Good luck!

How do you write a letter asking for college student discounts at restaurants?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I am writing a letter for my college dorms. We are located in NYC and have 600 residents. We will include the restaurants that give us discounts in our monthly newsletter, on every floor, and in our game room. Can someone help me with a sample letter or at least step-by-step tips.

In all out honesty, you would be better off going into the establishment and presenting your claim or cause and here it straight from the horses mouth so-to-speak. An appearance has much more impact, face to face, that sort of thing usually gets you much further than a letter. Good Luck.

The purpose of the letter is to ask for contribution to start my computer business.

i hope you are well.

or

i hope my letter finds you in the best of your health.

or

describe your project…. and then ….. hope you’ll support me in this.

What country song had actual letters about soldiers families read during the song?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Heard a song on the radio a year or two ago that had actual letters from the families of soldiers in Iraq read during the song like a chorus or something…can’t seem to find it now, maybe it was just a radio station exclusive?

It might have been a mixed edition of Lonestar’s "I’m Already There". I have heard a couple versions of it including a local version on my local radio station.

Here are a couple I researched and found. From it, I also saw tribute songs by Nickelback and TIm McGraw. Good luck.

How do I write a Cover letter for a community service opportunity?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

I want to send a cover letter along with my application for a position at the courthouses; it would involve assisting people at the Self-help centers. I have a paralegal degree but I really do not know how to write a community service cover letter. I have a few cover letters I already wrote and sent but they are not applicable for this type of position.
Bash- Thank you very much; I may be able to find an obscure case law but I could not find an applicable cover letter template. Again, Thank You!

Here’s a template: http://www.resumecoverlettersamples.net/community-volunteer-cover-letter/

Be sure to personalize it more than they do, be more specific about the particular job and your abilities. Good luck!

How to write a lien letter to an insurance adjuster?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

I am partnering with another person to become a funding company. I have an attorney involved, however unfortunately he does not return calls nor does he seem to be giving up the money that we have lend to his clients. This involves people who were in a car accident and filing personal injury claim. I need to know what a lien letter consists of so I can start sending the lien letter to the insurance adjusters directly showing that our funding company has a lien on the claim. Any one out there can lead me to a site that shows what the letter should consist of or can give me examples of how it should read?

As a former auto adjuster for 10 years, I NEVER RECD A LIEN FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS LOANED MONEY TO ATTORNEY’S CLIENTS.

The only liens received were from medical providers or from the insurance company for payments made on medical bills from an accident.

You need to hire your own personal attorney to handle. I question if what this lawyer has done is truly professional or ethical by loaning money to his clients prior to settling a claim. In many cases, if the client cannot afford to pay the medical bills, the lawyer will make an agreement with the providers to hold off, pending settling the claim and they then become a "lien to any settlement".

But in the 10 years of handling claims, I never wrote a check to a "funding company", but to insurance companies, medical providers/health insurance plus the lawyer and client only.

Talk to a lawyer today that will be representing you and this other person only.

good luck
