Ways to volunteer through writing letters?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I’m one of those rare people who still writes letters. I thought it would be nice for me to volunteer through my letter-writing…either supporting soldiers or the elderly, etc. Any recommendations for groups that I could work with? I’m creeped out by a lot of the hyper patriotic Iraq war organizations…I’d like to support the soldiers without buying into the "America’s the best place on earth" rhetoric. (I’m against the war but believe in supporting the men and women that are involved in it) Any suggestions?

Check out the following website…they may have addresses for the troops and also other letter writing ideas…

How many letters or emails does it take to inflence a member of congress?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

A member of congress once told me he had seen a study that it takes twenty-five letters to influence a federal elected official who is neutral and eighty letters for one who is negative.
I have not been able to find any such research and would like to know of anything this specific about what it takes.

There is no set number, but it would definitely be more than 25. It depends on the issue, and on whether the candidate has already been influenced by corporate interests.

Years ago, a politician told me that for every letter she receives, she assumes there are 99 others who feel equally as strong about the issue.

Do the math. That’s a truck-load of letters.

Letter writing campaigns are effective only if there are enough letters for the candidate to question his or her re-election potential.

If it’s the only tool available to you, then use it!

How to write a letter to Egypt keeping their culture and values in mind?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Hi there. For an assinment I must write a formal business letter to Egypt explaining that a product we provide them is late. I need to write it so that I include their culture and ways of letter writing in mind so that I come off sincere and polite. What are different ways I could do this? Are there popular salutations, etc that people in Egypt use?

There is nothing special with business letters in Egypt, not like East Asia where letters are full of "Thank you in advance" and things like that.
You write straight to the point. Something like:
Dear Sir,
This is to introduce XYZ corporation. We are the manufacturers of JKL products and so on.
