I have what looks like an authentic painting of Christ in Gethsemane by Hoffman? There are numbers and letters penciled on the back of what looks like canvas. Do these help authenticate the painting? There is no signature on the painting.
Hi! The original is at Riverside Church in
New York City. They have three paintings
by Heinrich Hofmann that were donated by
John D. Rockefeller, Jr.:
"Christ in Gethsemane" (1890), "Christ in the Temple"
(1871) and " Christ and the Rich Young Man" (1889).
The numbers on your piece must be inventory and/or
distribution codes by the firm that reproduced it.
I hope this helps!

I’m one of those rare people who still writes letters. I thought it would be nice for me to volunteer through my letter-writing…either supporting soldiers or the elderly, etc. Any recommendations for groups that I could work with? I’m creeped out by a lot of the hyper patriotic Iraq war organizations…I’d like to support the soldiers without buying into the "America’s the best place on earth" rhetoric. (I’m against the war but believe in supporting the men and women that are involved in it) Any suggestions?
Check out the following website…they may have addresses for the troops and also other letter writing ideas…

If I am applying to multiple graduate programs can letters of recommendation be general enough to send to more than once school? Do I have to ask profs to write more than one for me? Does each letter have to be geared towards a specific school’s program? What’s the scoop?
Most graduate programs have specific ways to send the letter, including through their website and therefore a separate letter has to be written for each school.
That being said, most letter writers just recycle the same letter but send it different places. If you are asking professors or bosses they usually have experience in this and know what to do best. I’d suggest just asking them if they would be willing to write you a recommendation letter for "X, Y, and Z" places, letting them know how many letters you would need. They they write the letters, putting what they want in there. Also make sure to pick people who are well known in your field.
Hope this helps

I make handmade items for children. I would like to approach a few stores or mail them a letter showing them what I can offer. What is that letter called and where can I find an example?
A sales or prospecting letter.
You can find books on writing sales letters and conducting marketing campaigns at your local college or public library.
One of the best books for small businesses is Jay Conrad Levinson’s "Guerrilla Marketing". It focuses on easy and low cost ways of building your business.
Hope this helps

Hello,
This may not be the most important issue of all time, but I am just curious. All major airports have a 3-letter FAA / IATA code, and a 4-letter ICAO code. In the U.S., this ICAO code is simply the FAA code preceded by a K. Except in Alaska and Hawaii, the 4-letter code starts with a P.
Why is that?
About France: The 3-letter IATA code is more or less random, depending on the name of the field. Paris Charles de Gaulle is therefore simply CDG. All 4-letter codes in France start with LF. Charles de Gaulle is LFPG. There is no connection between the 3-letter code and the 4-letter code.
If P stands for Pacific, then why don’t Washington, Oregon and California have P’s? And what does the K mean? Kontinental?
=D
Okay, some European countries have ICAO codes that start with an E. Holland is EHxx, Belgium is EBxx, Germany (Deutchland) is EDxx and so on. Amsterdam is EHAM. And some southern European countries have an L. Like LFxx for France, LExx for Spain (España) and LPxx for Portugal. And so on.
First off, Alaska has never been part of France… The territory was purchased from Russia in 1867.
The 4-letter ICAO idents for the contiguous states do, as you noted, just pust a "K" in front of the domestic 3-letter identifier. I don’t know why this wasn’t done for Alaska or Hawaii. Perhaps our further west location just made it easier to lump us in with the "Pacific" area, so both Alaskan and Hawaiian ICAO idents start with "P."
Alaskan locations are then further identified with an "A" and Hawaiian locations with an "H." Then the first two letters of the domestic location ID are used as the last two letters of the international ID. So Fairbanks (FAI) becomes "PAFA" and Molokai(MKK) becomes "PHMK."
In some cases–such as Anchorage (ANC) or Honolulu (HNL)–the 3-letter ident already starts with the designated second letter of the ICAO designation, so these become PANC and PHNL respectively.
