How should I ask my teachers for letters of recommendation?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I actually have a few questions about recommendation letters.

1. How should I go about asking teachers for them?
2. Is there anything I should give my teachers if they say yes?
3. Is there anything else I should know about recommendation letters?

1. I would choose teachers with whom you have a strong, personal relationship. You certainly want to select teachers whose classes you have done well in. I would simply approach them before/after class and ask "Would you be comfortable writing a letter of recommendation for me? I am applying for …." If this is not feasible, send them an e-mail asking if they would be comfortable writing a letter of recommendation and explaining why you would like a letter from them.
2. It is customary to give the teacher an envelope in which to place their recommendation. Depending on the program you are applying for, you may need to address and stamp it separately and have the teacher sign the seal (therefore preventing any tampering with the envelopes contents). Some programs will ask that you have the professor mail the envelope separately, while some request that you include it in your general mailing.
3. Remember that the teacher is doing you a favor by writing a letter of recommendation. Try to make it as easy for them as possible, including explaining what the program is you are applying for. Do not try to dictate what the teacher says. If they ask you, be prepared to talk up a few competencies you have demonstrated in their class or activities that you feel are relevant.

Good Luck!

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

I am writing a letter to y teacher as an assignment. In this letter I am suppose to convince her that it is a good idea to let me stay in English Pre-AP(kind of like honors). I am not on my way to get kicked out or anything of that kind, but I just want to impress her and for sure convince her. How do I start my letter?

Dear So-and-so,

is the most appropriate way to start a letter. even letters addressed to the queen of england start out like that. i think you’d sound a little weird if you said anything else. save the fancy writing for in the letter.

How do you write a letter asking for college student discounts at restaurants?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I am writing a letter for my college dorms. We are located in NYC and have 600 residents. We will include the restaurants that give us discounts in our monthly newsletter, on every floor, and in our game room. Can someone help me with a sample letter or at least step-by-step tips.

In all out honesty, you would be better off going into the establishment and presenting your claim or cause and here it straight from the horses mouth so-to-speak. An appearance has much more impact, face to face, that sort of thing usually gets you much further than a letter. Good Luck.

Need help to write letter to suggest a care home in my area adopt a cat?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

I’m writing a letter to a seniors home in my area that I volunteer at. I’m directing it to the administrator of the home, and I want to make it short but professional sounding. I want to convince them that adopting an older mature affectionate cat, for the ward, would help the seniors living there become less lonely and etc etc. I just don’t know how to word it. I’m lost. Any suggestions? I haven’t written a letter like this in 10 years!

One thing you could do to introduce the idea is ask if a pet therapy cat can come visit the residents. Check with your local animal shelter – a lot of them host these programs or at least will know locally who does. It’s one thing to read about the idea but to SEE how delighted residents are to see an animal would definitely go a long way to convince them to have one there permanently.

Look online for the recent news article about how having cats around reduces blood pressure.

Petitition the residents – tell them you think it’d be nice for them to have a cat. I’m sure LOTS of them had cats when they were younger and had their own homes. Maybe you could write up little comments from them with their names to go with your letter "I sure miss my cat Maggie. I loved when she sat on my lap and purred. She made me so happy. – Nancy Smith", "I would love for a cat to live here! I’d even let him or her sleep on my bed with me! – Bob Simpson", for example.

Since elderly people have very thin skin the nursing home management might worry that someone could be injured by the cat – even accidentally. Tell them you’ll find them a declawed cat. I don’t condone declawing in the LEAST bit but declawed cats often up at shelters. An owner who declaws their cat often isn’t someone who’ll pick the cat over a new place that doesn’t allow cats so they end up dumped at shelters. We see them quite often at the shelter I volunteer with and the reasons they’re there are generally as lame as the reasons why the owner declawed them in the first place. Declawed cats are often difficult to place, too, as we wouldn’t want them going to a home with other pets as it can’t defend itself. Note that shelters often discount adoptions to the elderly and especially so if the cat’s going into a facility. Or, you may even find a local business that will sponsor the adoption and then let the media know about the new nursing home cat that "Acme Printing" helped pay for, for example.

Search "pet facilitated therapy" online – you can find lots of info about the impact animals can have in a nursing home. I actually had one resident who supposedly didn’t talk and just muttered to himself. We were told to "be careful" by him because he "might get mean". He supposedly had Alzheimers. Well, he started talking to my dog and then me. He was competely enchanted with Tyler, my big goofy mutt, and soon was the first one at the door waiting to see him – with little bits of food he’d saved from meals because he knew he’d be there that day! Ends up my dog reminded him of his boyhood dog. This man that supposedly had no memory told us really great, elaborate stories of the adventures he and his dog had. He ended up Tyler’s favourite resident – he was as happy to see him as the man was to see Tyler! When I asked him why he never talked to anyone before we showed up he said "There was never anyone worth talking to!" lol

This is a wonderful thing you’re doing – let me know if you want a letter from me with my experience to help you. There was an article about my dog and I in the paper awhile ago that I can dig out and scan for you as well if you want.

What did the Romans write their letters on? How can I do this at home?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

I’m writing a letter in Latin, and I am required to present it to my teacher as an authentic Roman letter. How did the Romans present their letters? What were they written on? How can I present my letter using household objects?

The wax boards were called "tablets". I doubt anyone wrote letters with them because they were heat and weather sensitive.

The Vindolanda answer was good, although it’s more correct to call them credit-card sized strips of wood, not "bark".

However, the correct answer is Vellum. This is a kind of calf hide, scraped back and pared down and scraped back again until it was a very light leather similar to a thick plastic cover (a bit thicker than a manilla folder). Vellum lasted much longer than paper, or papyrus. papyrus was fine in egypt, because the very dry climate allowed for long term storage of paper. BUT in Italy it was much wetter, and paper spoiled and rotted too quickly, hence the use of vellum.

Vellum faded over time, so monks continually copied the documents onto new vellum "sheets". This resulted in many mistakes in the texts, usually biblical, over time as monks misread what was there, or whose Greek was poor. Yes, their Greek.

I don’t think your teacher will give points for killing a calf to strip its hide and make vellum. I suggest you do a mockup on cardboard but explain what you learned.

The closest household item to represent the material, other than cardboard, would be baking paper, but this is really cheating and not true.

Writing a letter of interest to a company you already work for?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

I just started at a new company 2 months ago, as a typical office assistant. They have a position open in the same department for a Staff Accountant, available in 2 months. The lady in the position is leaving for Germany in October. I have an accounting background, and expressed interest to my HR Director about this opening, and she said to submit a letter of interest. I don’t have a clue where to begin to write a letter of interest for this position, or how to draft a letter of interest when you already work for the company. Any suggestions, tips or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can try using Monster.com they have great resource tools…or even do a general search on the web for Letter of Interest. …

How to get my letter of recommendation for medical school written?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I am currently applying to both MD and DO programs. I am all set with MD, but have not finished the DO. I shadowed a DO and she offered to write me a letter 4 months ago. My applications are being held up because I am waiting for this one letter. How do I get her to finish the letter for me? I have been e-mailing her but there has been no response. She had no difficulty replying before the letter was discussed. The letter is due in a month, and that is little time to get someone else to write one. Any suggestions on how I can politely get the message through?

If at all possible I would try to meet her face to face. I would begin by saying how nice of her to committ to thating time out of her busy scheduele to write the letter in the first place and then follow up in reminding her how important this letter is to you and your future. I would also add that if the letter does not get completed there are certain negative effects that will occur. Mention a few of them in a calmly manner. Once she sees your genuine concern, and how much you are relying on this letter she will understand. I would also offer to give her suggestions as to what to include in the letter, perhaps I would go as so far as writing a letter of recommendation for her approval and signature. This eliminates the burden of her time to write you this letter and you get to say exactly what you want the letter to state, all at the same time getting her to endorse it.

I was in a similar situation in the past and the above steps accomplished my goal in getting a letter of recommendation.

One final tip, set up a very specific time and location to pick up the letter. It would also "grease the wheels" if you approached her with a coffee or tea, to break the ice both when you ask her to get the letter written and again when you pick the letter up. Do not be cheap get her the large!

Hope that helps! Just in case explore other options or other people that can write you a letter of recommendation. As a plan B, even if you feel there is no time.
